What do I need to know before buying a headstone?
When I buy a headstone, what exactly is included in the cost?
When you complete the purchase of a headstone, the following elements are included in the total cost:
The stone itself & the erection of the monument
Inscriptions and engravings, please note that more elaborate designs such as photographs are not included in the fee
Kerbing and chippings in the case where these items are permitted
Please note that the headstone foundation & permit fee are not included in this cost and there will be a separate fee for this
*NOTE ALL HEADSTONES REQUIRE A PERMIT FEE. IF IT IS A NEW HEADSTONE A FOUNDATION FEE IS APPLIED. IF IT IS A REPLACEMENT HEADSTONE A FOUNDATION FEE IS NOT APPLIED AS IT HAS ALREADY BE PAID FOR BUT A PERMIT FEE IS ALWAYS APPLIED.
How soon after a burial can I put up a headstone?
This varies from site to site and the wishes of the deceased.
At Dardistown, Newlands Cross, and Palmerstown - headstones can be erected immediately after burial.
At Glasnevin and Goldenbridge, applications seeking approval to put up the headstone need to be approved. Once approval is granted, a foundation needs to be put in place.In some cases, parties choose to erect the headstone prior to passing, contact the Monuments team for further information on this service.
What am I permitted to put on a grave?
What can I put on the headstone itself?
Most people opt for inscriptions that denote the name and date of death, and in some cases a saying or appropriate words. You can also choose to have a photograph or artwork etched onto the stone.
